This image of Egyptian chess players captured the eye of the most influential print publisher and art dealer of the era and catapulted this Dutch-born British artist into the public eye as a significant classical-subject European artist. Remarkable for its fine execution and brilliant colors, this fine work makes a game of chess in a far-off land simultaneously exotic and familiar, and as timeless as if it were taking place in our very own homes. Alma-Tadema became famous for his depictions of the luxury and decadence of the Roman Empire and was eventually knighted for his accomplishments. The authentic stretched canvas replica painting captures the original work's texture, depth of color, and even its subtle brushstrokes, which are applied by hand exclusively for Design Toscano. The imported, delicately carved hardwood frame boasts a delicate leaf motif with fine feathered detailing finished in antique gold tones.
