This vivid image of a Valkyrie from Norse mythology chooses to fly into battle straddling the world between life and afterlife as a guide to Valhalla for fallen Viking warriors. This strange, seductive scene depicts a nubile rider grasping the great black wings of her flying steed shimmering in the moonlight mysterious and otherworldly amid the play of contrasting shapes, space and light and shadows created with gouache and pastels. “Dream Idyll” is considered his tour de force of execution. English artist Hughes attended the Royal Academy School he also worked as a studio assistant to Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood founding member William Hunt. His own work was in Aestheticism, worked in watercolors and oils using romantic interpretations of old myths, tales and legends. The authentic stretched canvas replica painting captures the original work's texture, depth of color, and even its subtle brushstrokes, which are applied by hand exclusively for Design Toscano. Our replica 4.375" wide, European style, bright gold-toned, ribbed frame is cast in quality designer resin with an acanthus leaf and floret border that draws the eye toward the beautiful image.

About The Artist

Edward Robert Hughes (1851-1914)
Edward Robert Hughes is a well-known English painter who identified with the Pre-Raphaelite and Aesthetic movements often working in watercolor or gouache. Hughes's paintings display a detailed observation of nature and devotion to intricate painting.
Hughes regularly exhibited his paintings at the Royal Academy the Royal Watercolor Society the British Institution and the Grosvenor Gallery. At all these venues he showed his more Pre-Raphaelite symbolic paintings including one of his most well known Midsummer Eve. Hughes was also inclined to paint based on stories from Italian literature and Shakespeare and always with a mystical atmosphere as in Ophelia. His favorite colors in which to paint were blue and gold as can be seen in Twilight Fantasies.
Like many other Victorian artists Hughes was a staunch perfectionist. But he is more remembered for being a kind mentor to young painters and a much-loved lecturer.
