About The Artist
Demetre H. Chiparus (1886-1947)
Romanian sculptor Demetre H. Chiparus was an Art-Deco era sculptor of dancers who lived and worked in Paris. His renowned sculptures were produced between 1914 and 1933 and made in a combination of bronze and ivory that allowed for dramatic stylized structure a technique known as Chryselephantine. His later works in the 1920s were influenced by Chiparus's growing fascination with Egypt.
Chiparus sculptures early on were created in realism and exhibited at the Salon in 1914. After Pharoah Tutankhamen's tomb was excavated in 1922 Chiparus created sculptures inspired by Egypt such as Egyptian Dancer.
Some of Chiprus's most exciting sculptures of dancers taken from the Russian Ballet French theatre early motion pictures and opera as can be seen in Thais Dancer. Sculptures such as Peacock Fan Dancer are captured in movement highly Art Deco in style appearing very long and lean.
Demetre Chiparus came from the old French tradition of high-quality and extra-artistic decorative arts thus the sculptures of Demetre Chiparus embodied the Art Deco movement by combining elegance and luxury.
