$189.00 – $499.00

A significant moment of Biblis’ life frozen in time is featured in this modern interpretation of a classical subject. This impeccable study of a nude woman illustrates the depth of Biblis’ grief and loneliness after her twin brother has left her alone. From the Ovid, as the story goes, Biblis strips herself naked in her sorrow, wanting to kill herself but was saved and turned into a spring which is suggested by Bouguereau’s skillful use of water echoing her reflection. French artist Bouguereau, was considered an Academic and traditionalist with modern interpretations of classical and mythological subjects. As a teacher, frescoesist and draftsman Bouguereau opened art to women and held coed classes. Popular with Victorian patrons in France and the United States, few could match Bouguereau’s realistic figures touched with idealism. The authentic stretched canvas replica painting captures the original work's texture, depth of color, and even its subtle brushstrokes, which are applied by hand exclusively for Design Toscano. Our replica 4.375" wide, European style, bright gold-toned, ribbed frame is cast in quality designer resin with an acanthus leaf and floret border that draws the eye toward the beautiful image.

Proudly printed and framed in the USA using imported molding.

  • About The Artist

      William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825-1905)
William had a long successful career as an academic painter exhibiting in the annual Paris Salons for more than 50 years. His paintings of religious mythological and genre subjects were carefully composed and painstakingly finished. Thus he opposed the admission of works by the impressionists to the Salon because he believed that their paintings were no more than unfinished sketches. After a period of neglect following his death Bouguereau's paintings were returned to view as part of a renewed interest in and reappraisal of academic painting and of Ecole des Beaux-Arts works in general. A major retrospective exhibition opened in Paris and was seen in Montreal and Hartford Connecticut in 1984.
