The Carpet Merchant, 1887: Canvas Replica Painting: Small
Item#DA4281
By artist Jean-Leon Gerome (1824-1904), in a Private Collection
The Cairo rug market comes to life in this sumptuous scene that almost echoes with the excitedly bartering voices, vibrantly hand-dyed hues and fabled Egyptian mysteries of the age-old trade. One of France's most highly-regarded and decorated artists during his lifetime, Gerome was a member of the Institut de France, a knight in the Legion d'honneur, a member of the British Royal Academy and a recipient of the Grand Order of the Red Eagle. The authentic stretched canvas replica painting captures the original work's texture, depth of color, and even its subtle brushstrokes, which are applied by hand exclusively for Design Toscano. The imported, delicately carved hardwood frame boasts a delicate leaf motif with fine feathered detailing finished in antique gold tones.

   Jean-Léon Gérome (1824-1904)

Painter, sculptor, and teacher, one of the most prominent late 19th-century academic artists in France. Gerome, whose father was a goldsmith, studied with J.H. Delaroche. His historical and mythological compositions were anecdotal, painstaking, often melodramatic, and frequently erotic. The surfaces of his paintings were highly finished, and he was fascinated with technical virtuosity. He was a good draftsman and an inventive illustrator. A trip to Egypt in 1856 introduced an exotic element into his painting. During the last 25 years of his life he concentrated on sculpture. A highly successful artist, Gerome exerted great influence in the Paris art world.
