Paul Gauguin (1848-1903)French painter, sculptor and graphic artist, Paul Gauguin was the creator of a new conception of painting. His work was a formative influence on twentieth century art. Like van Gogh's, Gauguin's life has become almost a modern legend. Born in Paris, raised in Peru, he served first in the French merchant marine, then became a successful Paris stockbroker, painting in his spare time. He exhibited with the Impressionists and first evidenced great talent with his Study of the Nude. In the latter part of his life Gauguin traveled to Tahiti, where his painting would be influenced forever.
