Menelaus Holding Up the Body of Patroclus Bonded Marble Statue
Restorations by Ludovico Salvetti (1579), Loggi dei Lanzi, Florence
The eye is effortlessly drawn across this timelessly classic composition that spins the Iliad's tale of a life lost to war. Artistically cast in bonded natural marble, each nuance is visually rendered in this museum-quality sculpt, a masterpiece so fine that it was originally presented as a gift to Pope Pius V. It is an ancient Roman statue from the Flavian era, discovered in Rome and having undergone many restorations, the latest having been in 1830 by Stefano Ricci.
