Jean Beraud (1848-1935)Jean Beraud was a French Impressionistic and Naturalist Painter, as well as a successful commercial artist. The majority of Beraud's paintings, such as A Sunday Afternoon, were scenes of daily life in Paris during the Belle poque era and style. In 1894, he was awarded the Lgion d honneur.
Beraud began painting portraits after the Franco-Prussian war and received training as a portraitist by one of France's leading painters. A social consciousness as well as his vast talent at communicating the personality of his figures and their anecdotal body language marked Beraud paintings.
Beraud's paintings were often satirical and he unabashedly humorously mocked the opulence of late 19th-century Parisian life. He was also very successful with his depiction of fashionable Parisian women of the 1890s. These superficial representations of femininity were very popular amongst the French and Russian aristocrats who bought Beraud's paintings.
