Marcellus Statue
Also known as Germanicus by Kleomenes
1st Century BC, Louvre, Paris
This classic statue evokes timeless beauty in the idyllic form of one of Rome's great men. Cast directly from the original scaled Roman statue of ca. 50 B.C. by the sculptor Kleomenes. The Nude male statue, erroneously identified as Germanicus, a member of the family of the Emperor Augustus, probably should be considered a portrait of a member of a wealthy family of the late Republic. It is here represented with a body copied from a well-known statue of the god Hermes (Mercury), the Orator, which stood in Athens. This nude male sculpture is executed in the classicizing style popular in the 1st century B.C. when sculptors like Kleomenes looked for inspiration to the masters of the 5th and 4th centuries in Greece. A distinctive addition to your home or garden gallery, our exclusive work echoes the fine sculptures seen on European estates.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Beautiful Statue Love the Marcellus Statue. I have bought several items over the years through Design Toscano, and have always been very pleased with the quality and detail that goes into every piece. December 7, 2015
Rated 2 out of 5 by Marcellus Statue Not like the picture in the fact that this one has his pointer and thumb together on his temple like he is pulling a stray hair from it. The appearance does not look like marble but of cheap plastic. I would not recommend this product to my friends. August 31, 2015
Rated 4 out of 5 by Marcellus Statue This is a nice fit with other garden sculptures I have in the garden. Size is good not overpowering for a small garden. Adds variety to my several female statues. July 22, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Nice piece overall, but not exactly like the sales photo. Based on the sales photo, I was expecting Marcellus to have a bright, uniform, off-white finish. Instead, the finish is streaky and, in some areas, blotchy. I received confirmation that it's normal for this statue, as it is meant to replicate an unpolished marble-like finish. Still, I would have preferred a smooth, evenly-colored finish. You can see what I mean in the pictures I uploaded. If you are a perfectionist, beware that some of the proportions are not correct. I find this version of Marcellus' thumbs and index fingers abnormally long, while other parts are disproportionately small. That being said, though, this is a very handsome statue. For me, it's a keeper. February 14, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Not as tall as I thought I bought it as a gift for my wife, but it was not as big and heavy as I was hoping. It sits by the chimney right now in full view for everyone to enjoy. I just wish you sold more erotic nudes (males and females) close to six feet tall. Then we would be order more often. June 21, 2013

Rated 4 out of 5 by Az sun can be an issue Purchased Marcellus about 8 years ago, he stands next to the pool. He now needs a paint job. Over the years a support rod pushed through at his wrist, looks likr a compound fracture so I grinded it off. He also developed rust spot on his leg. Detailed, right down to the toe nails, but he comes with a very small winky, smaller than his thumb. The paint has oxidized, needs a repaint. All in all he has held up very well in the AZ sun.
