This is a very accurate and faithful reproduction of the life mask done by Leonard Volk of Lincoln in March 1860. The original is in the Smithsonian Institution and was done for Volk to use as a model for a "Hermes" style (one showing head and only part of shoulders) bust of Lincoln which was presented to Mary Lincoln the day her husband received his party's nomination for president in 1860. It is an important mask because it served not only as a model for Volk's bust, but several other statues of Lincoln use this mask as the model for the face.
