For what this set cost, I was expecting a nicely finished, weighted chess set. What I received is essentially an artistic piece of junk.
The pieces are very light, unbalanced and poorly cushioned. The base seems like it's protected by a piece of glue on felt that could be purchased at any Home Depot / Menard / Lowes. In fact, the glue on felt would probably be better. It would certainly look better.
The chess board is of light construction, although of a somewhat sturdier material that the pieces, The problem is that it looks like it was finished in a third-grade art class. The borders of the individual squares are sloppy and the paint used of very poor quality. This is okay for a den, but I wouldn't put it in a game room or living room.
Overall, extremely disappointing. Definitely not recommended.

I ordered this chess set for my boyfriend's birthday, who is an avid chess player, and was really excited to find this set because he is also very much into anything medieval / mystical. I loved that it was unique and combined two of his favorite things. However, after opening the box, I noticed how poorly the board was put together. We didn't even get it onto the table before the outer wood started separating from the metal board. The board itself, is bent and dented along the edges, and for what I paid, I just had a lot higher expectations for something that is supposed to have been of good quality. The chess pieces are cute, not exactly the material I was expecting, but light weight and intricately designed. Regardless, I was extremely disappointed and will be sending the chess set back. We have not yet decided if we will exchange it for another one (hoping it will not have these same defects) or just return it completely.
