Cold Girl Bonded Marble Statue

by Jean-Antoine Houdon (1741-1828), Musee Fabre, Montpelier, France

Unclothed, save for the wrap thrown over her head and shoulders, this 1783 allegory of winter stands near a cracked vase whose exterior is covered with spilled water, turned to ice. Created in bonded natural marble to reflect the original, Houdon's work portrays unadorned naturalism.
