Thais Statue
By Demetre H. Chiparus (1886-1947)
Ever mindful of the culture of his day, Romanian-born Chiparus sculpted “Thais,” an Alexandrian hetaera, after a popular 19th-century opera. Intricately sculpted and meticulously hand-painted in muted metallics, it has been finished with flesh tones to replicate the original ivory. Cast in designer resin and set atop a faux marble base, our graceful museum-quality dancer is marvelously detailed.

Demetre H. Chiparus (1886-1947)
Romanian sculptor Demetre H. Chiparus was an Art-Deco era sculptor of dancers who lived and worked in Paris. His sculptures were renowned, produced between 1914 and 1933, and made in a combination of bronze and ivory that allowed for dramatic, stylized structure, a technique known as Chryselephantine. His later works in the 1920s were influenced by Chiparus s growing fascination with Egypt.
Chiparus sculptures early on were created in realism and exhibited at the Salon in 1914. After Pharoah Tutankhamen s tomb was excavated in 1922, Chiparus created sculptures inspired by Egypt, such as Egyptian Dancer.
Some of Chiprus s most exciting sculptures of dancers taken from the Russian Ballet, French theatre, early motion pictures, and opera, as can be seen in Thais Dancer. Sculptures such as Peacock Fan Dancer are captured in movement, highly Art Deco in style, appearing very long and lean.
Demetre Chiparus came from the old French tradition of high-quality and extra-artistic decorative arts, thus the sculptures of Demetre Chiparus embodied the Art Deco movement by combining elegance and luxury.

"Being an admirer of Artist Dimitri Chiparus and Art Enthusist, appreciate Art Deco Figures and Sculptures. I have been quite happy with my purchases of the Ankara Dancer, Thais Statue, Antinea Sculpture and the Egyptian Dancer. The quality and fine detailing is the next best thing to an original by Chiparus. I have since ordered The Fan Dancer, Sunburst and Winged Peacock Princess Mirror of your Art Deco Collection......Very Satisfied Customer, Bob"
