The Fitzjames Hand-Carved Solid Mahogany Throne Chair

A showpiece of regal proportions.
Hand carved solid mahogany replica
There was no choice whatsoever—once we laid eyes on this imposingly magnificent piece, we had to have it for our catalog! It requires over 3 weeks to carve in the very masculine tradition of English antiques. Its immense claw feet rise, flanked by winged creatures and regal sentinels, in high relief. The leather, cushioned seat spans a full yard (room for two!), while the stately back stands almost 6 feet high, making it the most massive chair we’ve ever offered. There's no getting around it, this ornate, fit-for-a-king piece will be the crowning glory of any room!

Much shinier than the picture. Not happy about that. I've had my eye on this piece and wanted it for almost 20 yrs. Now the wait is over. I'm finally making good money. It went on sale ($900 off) but the shipping was $350. A week later they (DT) sweetened the deal and offered FREE shipping. So I jumped on it. I was so excited I couldn't stand it. I felt like a kid waiting for Christmas morning. It arrived in pristine condition. I mean even the box didn't have one blemish and it was well protected with foam injection at all the important points between the throne and inside box. However, when it arrived, something didn't look right. It was magnificent in every way but something was wrong. I finally noticed that it was much shinier than the pics. Normally, I'm all about protecting fine wood furniture best you can but this is supposed to be a medieval piece. Did they even have varnish back then? Long story short, I think it has way too many coats of varnish. It looks like there's about 20 coats and it looks like plastic not wood. Don't get me wrong, it's solid wood and a full 85 lbs! I tried to figure out how to return it but packing and shipping costs (to me) are a least $1,000! So, although not 100% happy, I'm keeping it. Maybe I can find a professional to rough it up a little without damaging it. July 3, 2015

Magnificent chair Get ready for this one. This is one big chair. It is so big that it dwarfs any chairs nearby. It is beautiful. It is big on masculinity. The sphinxes are massive. I have the Charles II chairs against the same wall. Though to me they are beautiful hall chairs they actually look small when placed near the Fitzjames. I could not manage to get this chair through a 30" opening but had no trouble with a 36" opening. Which placed it in another room. The Lord Raffles throne chair is as tall but not as thick even with its 5" lions on the armrests. I never thought I could accompany this large piece. It is awesome. Thank you again Toscano January 13, 2015
