Marcellus Statue
Also known as Germanicus by Kleomenes
1st Century BC, Louvre, Paris
This classic statue evokes timeless beauty in the idyllic form of one of Rome's great men. Cast directly from the original scaled Roman statue of ca. 50 B.C. by the sculptor Kleomenes. The Nude male statue, erroneously identified as Germanicus, a member of the family of the Emperor Augustus, probably should be considered a portrait of a member of a wealthy family of the late Republic. It is here represented with a body copied from a well-known statue of the god Hermes (Mercury), the Orator, which stood in Athens. This nude male sculpture is executed in the classicizing style popular in the 1st century B.C. when sculptors like Kleomenes looked for inspiration to the masters of the 5th and 4th centuries in Greece. A distinctive addition to your home or garden gallery, our exclusive work echoes the fine sculptures seen on European estates.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Design Toscano always exceeds expectations... The product was easy to order, including getting a shipping quote for Canada. It arrived sooner than expected, was well packed and the statue was everything we had hoped it would be. We have bought a fair amount from Design Toscano over the years and they always have provided good quality products and good service. The detail in the statue is excellent and the finish is very realistic, making one feel you have an antique. From every angle, this statue is pleasing to look at and makes a stunning statement in our classical sculpture display. Wish there were more pieces like this one to order.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Striking! I ordered Marcellus for my home--I wanted something classic but not cliché. Marcellus fit the bill perfectly. He's handsome and beautiful. My only criticism is that he isn't as smooth or glossy as I had hoped. I wish he had more of a polished marble look. The detail is excellent and he has such a serene, far-away look in his face. I was struck by an odd thought though: He is indeed a classic male nude--one could easily imagine him in the garden of a Roman Senator but.....when I saw him out of the corner of my eye I got the impression of him as a young man just stepping out of the showers with a towel draped over his shoulder and answering his cell phone. I'd also like to say something about the packaging. WOW. I was totally impressed. Looked more like a shipment being sent from one major museum to another across the sea.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Marcellus Statue Not like the picture in the fact that this one has his pointer and thumb together on his temple like he is pulling a stray hair from it. The appearance does not look like marble but of cheap plastic. I would not recommend this product to my friends.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Marcellus Statue This is a nice fit with other garden sculptures I have in the garden. Size is good not overpowering for a small garden. Adds variety to my several female statues.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice piece overall, but not exactly like the sales photo. Based on the sales photo, I was expecting Marcellus to have a bright, uniform, off-white finish. Instead, the finish is streaky and, in some areas, blotchy. I received confirmation that it's normal for this statue, as it is meant to replicate an unpolished marble-like finish. Still, I would have preferred a smooth, evenly-colored finish. You can see what I mean in the pictures I uploaded. If you are a perfectionist, beware that some of the proportions are not correct. I find this version of Marcellus' thumbs and index fingers abnormally long, while other parts are disproportionately small. That being said, though, this is a very handsome statue. For me, it's a keeper.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not as tall as I thought I bought it as a gift for my wife, but it was not as big and heavy as I was hoping. It sits by the chimney right now in full view for everyone to enjoy. I just wish you sold more erotic nudes (males and females) close to six feet tall. Then we would be order more often.
