In the early 18th century, a number of artists devoted themselves to the painting of landscapes and vedutes (views in perspective). Giovanni Paolo Panini excelled at this genre; the frescoes he created for the Villa Patrizi won him renown. This particular scene features great Renaissance statues (never actually together in one gallery).
