Marianne Stokes (1855-1927)

Austrian painter Marianne Stokes studied painting in France, where, like many young artists, the rustic naturalist movement influenced her. Stokes s subjects began in the rustic genre, but she eventually settled on medieval romantic and biblical themes.

Stokes wanted to be a painter since childhood and studied art from an early age. Stokes was married to the English landscape painter Adrian Stokes and they traveled extensively together, painting along the way. Marianne Stokes s paintings were often completed in Tempura, giving the effect of being frescoes on old plastered wall surfaces.

As a member of the Royal Academy, Stokes exhibited her paintings, such as Aucassin and Nicollette, and they were met with much love and admiration, both for their appeal and Stokes s devotion to the rustic genre style, no matter the subject.
