Victorian era, British painter John Atkinson Grimshaw is recognized for his paintings of landscapes, rural towns and dockyards, especially at sunset or by moonlight. Grimshaw s paintings did not change in style or subject matter throughout his career; he was wholeheartedly committed to perfecting his individual artistic vision.
Grimshaw was greatly influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites and in that style he painted landscapes in accurate color and lighting and with great attention to detail. His immense skill in handling lighting gave his paintings an intimate feel and strong mood, especially with his moonlight paintings.
Grimshaw painted mostly for private clients and exhibited only five paintings at the Royal Academy between 1874 and 1886. Glasgow, Liverpool, Leeds and London are among the towns featured in Grimshaw s paintings. Grimshaw s moonlight paintings are his most popular, and these include Spirit of the Night.
