Frederick William Burton (1816-1900)

Irish landscape painter and watercolorist Frederick Burton painted portraits, historical scenes and genre paintings in addition to being Director of the National Gallery of Ireland from 1874 through 1894.

Born in Dublin, Burton began exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1842. After many long trips across Europe, Burton was exposed to the works of the old masters, where he gleaned much knowledge and insight.

Burton s many watercolor paintings, such as The Meeting on the Turret Stairs, is exhibited at the National Gallery of Ireland, the same gallery Burton headed up for so many years.
