Arthur Hughes (1832-1915)

English painter and illustrator Arthur Hughes was one of the most distinguished Pre-Raphaelites of the 1850s, known for his lyrical delicacy of color and drawing. Hughes s best-known paintings depict couples contemplating transcendent love and beauty, placing great emphasis on the ability of humanity to cling to the freshness of youth with the overpowering regeneration of nature.

Hughes is often compared to John Everett Millais because they both painted couples. Like Millais, Hughes painted Ophelia. Hughes s paintings are recognized for their magical, glowing color and delicate draftsmanship, such as in Midsummer Eve.

In addition to being best of the younger Pre-Raphaelite followers in painting, Hughes was one of the leading book illustrators for the Sixties School.
