Albert Joseph Moore (1841-1893)

English decorative painter Albert Joseph Moore was renowned in his native England during the first half of the 19th century for his portrait and landscape paintings. A painter s painter, Moore denied himself the opulence characteristic of Victorian painters, opting for the simplicity of beauty, color and lines the only things that mattered in painting, according to Moore.

From 1858 to 1870, Moore painted and exhibited many pictures and drawings. The spirit of his art is influenced deeply by ancient Greek sculptures, as can be seen in Midsummer. His use of bright colors, fine lines, and the decorative arrangement of lines and color masses show that Moore was not trying to tell a story, but to be a refined applicator of decorative principles.

Moore s paintings are credited with bringing together the aesthetic and the classical into a new Victorian combination.
