Alan Lee (b. 1947)

Illustrator Alan Lee was born in 1947 in Middlesex, England. Lee s illustrations are classically romantic in style and created in watercolors. Working mainly in the fantasy genre, such as with The Lady of the Fountain, Lee s illustrations are magical visuals of imaginative fantasy.

Lee has illustrated several fantasy books, but is most successful by becoming the main illustrator for the reissuing of the Lord of the Rings books by British author J.R.R. Tolkein. Lee created the artwork for the dust jackets and covers for the 1987 reissuing and has continued to create precise and beautiful illustrations for further publications of the Ring stories.

In 2004, Alan Lee won an Academy Award for Best Art Direction on the third film in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Return of the King.
