 John William Godward (1861-1922)
English painter John William Godward painted everyday life scenes in the Pre-Raphaelite and Neo-classical styles. Little is known about Godward s personal life, but he painted primarily classical architecture and landscapes formed by marble. Godward was inspired by fellow neoclassical painter Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema and emulated his Marble School style.
Godward s paintings draw from Ancient Greek and Roman themes and most paintings depict women in Classical clothing, posed against marbled landscapes, such as with The Betrothed. To ensure authenticity, Godward studied architecture and spent a great deal of time making sure every detail was anatomically and historically accurate.
Because of his penchant for painting beautiful women in bright colors, Godward can be classified as a Pre-Raphaelite. Because of his subject matter of ancient civilizations, however, Godward is also considered a Victorian Neoclassical painter. This mlange style was common among painters of Godward s era, who produced paintings that were both realistic as well as idealized images of beauty.
